Charlotte Lui, Moving Drawing
Charlotte Lui is a local artist from Hong Kong who graduated in 2019 from the Department of Visual Art at Hong Kong Baptist University, specializing in drawing and printmaking. In 2021, she launched "Moving Drawing," a platform where she transforms her observations of Hong Kong into drawings. Always equipped with a small sketchbook, Lui captures the city's vibrant hustle and bustle using simple lines and brushstrokes. Through her artwork, she inspires viewers to embrace each day as ‘the best day,’ embodying the spirit of carpe diem. Her goal is to document the daily and seasonal changes in Hong Kong, enabling viewers to carry the city’s memories beyond its borders.
Recently, Lui has focused on independent publishing and printmaking. Since 2020, she has engaged in life drawing at MTR stations. Along with her friend Norris, she created MTR Notebook (2020), a zine featuring Charlotte's illustrations of moments in the MTR, accompanied by Norris's light poems that capture the essence of urban life.
Additionally, Lui collaborated with Peter to publish the Moving Drawing Notebook, a calendar for 2022. In 2023, she teamed up with Peter and Nightingales for another calendar project, illustrating moments in transportation while they wrote about the city’s unique anomalies with vitality and creativity, merging humanistic insights with artistic expression. Her recent solo exhibitions, Charlotte Lui Solo Exhibition and Hello 2023, was held at ACO Books and Word by Word Collective in Foo Tak Building, Wan Chai, in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Lui also launched the new book with Wan Li Book Company Limited in 2024.
As a local illustrator, Lui has collaborated with various brands since 2021, including MTR, Hong Kong Disneyland, Montblanc, among others. Through “Moving Drawing,” she seeks to explore diverse locations in Hong Kong and around the world, observing and interpreting her surroundings from a unique perspective.
