Box-type World

August 16- October 31, 2024

Box-type pixelated images are characterized by a distinct low-resolution, block-like aesthetic, where individual pixels are visible as square blocks of colour. In the essay "In Defense of the Poor Image," German filmmaker Hito Steyerl champions the cultural and political value of these low-quality, highly compressed digital images that circulate widely online. Steyerl argues these poor images undermine traditional notions of originality, and authenticity, instead empowering marginalized communities to participate in visual culture on their terms.

Drawing inspiration from Steyerl's ideas, the exhibition “Box-type World,” featuring a series of pixelated acrylic paintings done by Filipino artist CHN0, explores the role of these pixelated images in both the digital sphere and broader society. Using 3D technology software, the artist translates ordinary everyday scenes in his life onto canvas, rendering them in a blurry pixelated, cartoony style with vibrant colours. His practice therefore explores the interplay between the physical and digital realms. Not only do these images offer an intimate glimpse into the artist's life, but also reflect the growing prominence of such pixelated aesthetics within the digital landscape. CHN0's work critically demonstrates how these democratized, low-fidelity images have taken on new political and cultural significance, challenging traditional hierarchies of visual representation.
