Here and There

November 08 - December 12, 2024

Yidi Art is excited to present Here and There, the solo exhibition of Hong Kong local artist Moving Drawing Charlotte Lui. This exhibition showcases her latest collection of drawings and paintings, inspired by her observations in various locations across Hong Kong and beyond. It captures her experiences in the subway and the stresses urban dwellers face. Additionally, it includes intriguing and absurd anecdotes from Hong Kong and Taiwan. All of this is infused with her vivid imagination and presented in a monochromatic tone, featuring simple yet dynamic lines. Through her work, she aims to foster a connection with viewers, encouraging them to reflect on the past year with a sense of joy and optimism.

In the book The Production of Space, French philosopher Henri Lefebvre argues that space is not merely a physical backdrop for human activity; rather, it is socially produced and intrinsically linked to social relations. He emphasizes that our understanding and experience of space are shaped by cultural, historical, and political contexts. Building on Lefebvre’s insights, Here and There explores the contrasts and connections between different spaces and experiences within the urban landscape through Lui’s oeuvre. It invites viewers to consider the emotional resonance of places and the interplay of the local and the distant, highlighting how our perceptions of place shape our identities and narratives in both familiar and foreign contexts. Lui’s oeuvre fosters a deeper awareness of the environments we inhabit and the stories they hold, while urging us to embrace the diversity of experiences that define our urban existence.
